How Meralco bills are computed in 2026

Your Meralco bill is the sum of seven main components, all charged per kWh consumed (except for fixed government taxes). The largest component is the Generation Charge — which Meralco passes through from independent power producers and isn’t profit for the company. The actual amount Meralco earns is the Distribution Charge (about 12-15% of your total bill).

The formula

Monthly Bill = kWh consumed × Rate per kWh

Rate per kWh ≈ Generation + Transmission + System Loss + Distribution + Subsidies + Universal Charges + VAT

For 2026 (typical residential):
  ~₱6.90 Generation + ~₱1.07 Transmission + ~₱0.59 System Loss
  + ~₱1.54 Distribution + ~₱0.35 Subsidies + ~₱1.42 VAT & Govt
  ≈ ₱11.85/kWh total

2026 typical Meralco bill breakdown (per kWh)

Charge ComponentTypical Rate (₱/kWh)% of Bill
Generation Charge6.9058%
Transmission Charge1.079%
System Loss Charge0.595%
Distribution Charge (Meralco’s earning)1.5413%
Subsidies (Lifeline + Senior)0.050.4%
Universal Charges (FIT-All, etc.)0.302.6%
Government Taxes (VAT 12%, Franchise, etc.)1.4212%

Generation Charge varies monthly based on global fuel prices and the WESM (Wholesale Electricity Spot Market) — that’s why your bill swings even when consumption stays the same.

Typical appliance consumption (kWh/month)

Want to lower your bill? Start by knowing which appliances eat the most electricity. Estimates assume average daily use:

AppliancekWh/monthMonthly Cost
Aircon, 1HP non-inverter (8 hrs/day)~180₱2,133
Aircon, 1HP inverter (8 hrs/day)~100₱1,185
Refrigerator (24/7, 8 cu.ft.)~45₱533
TV LED 43″ (5 hrs/day)~15₱178
Electric Fan (8 hrs/day)~12₱142
Washing Machine (3× per week)~7₱83
Microwave (15 min/day)~5₱59
Electric Iron (2 hrs/week)~10₱119
Rice Cooker (1 hr/day)~12₱142
Water Heater (instant, 15 min/day)~16₱190
LED Bulb 9W (6 hrs/day, ×5 bulbs)~8₱95

Tips to lower your Meralco bill

  • Switch to inverter aircon — saves 40-50% over non-inverter on the same usage. Biggest single bill reduction for most households.
  • Set aircon to 24-25°C, not 16-18°C. Each 1°C lower increases consumption by ~7%.
  • Use timer/sleep mode on aircon — runs less during deep sleep hours.
  • Switch all bulbs to LED — uses 80% less than incandescent, 50% less than CFL.
  • Unplug “vampire” appliances (TV, microwave, chargers) when not in use. Standby power adds ~5-10% to your bill.
  • Refrigerator: keep coils clean and set temperature to 3-4°C (fridge) / -18°C (freezer). Don’t overpack.
  • Pay your bill on time — Meralco’s 2% late payment surcharge compounds monthly.
  • Avoid peak hours (1-9 PM) for heavy appliances if you’re on a time-of-use plan.

Sample bills at different consumption levels

Example 1: Small household — 100 kWh/month

  • Bill estimate: ~₱1,185
  • If enrolled in Lifeline: discount of ~50% on first 50 kWh = save ~₱296
  • Net: ~₱889/month

Example 2: Average family — 250 kWh/month

  • Bill estimate: ~₱2,962
  • No Lifeline (consumption above 100 kWh)
  • Daily cost: ~₱99

Example 3: Large household with aircon — 500 kWh/month

  • Bill estimate: ~₱5,925
  • Aircon likely accounts for ₱2,000-₱2,500 of this
  • Switching from non-inverter to inverter could save ~₱1,000/month

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Meralco bill change every month even with the same usage?

The Generation Charge (~58% of your bill) is set monthly based on global fuel prices, Malampaya gas supply, and electricity market prices (WESM). When oil/coal prices rise globally or there’s a power supply shortage, your bill goes up — even if your kWh consumption is identical. The Distribution Charge (Meralco’s portion) stays relatively stable.

What is the Lifeline rate and who qualifies?

The Lifeline rate is a subsidy for low-income households consuming 100 kWh or less per month. Subsidies range from 100% on the first 15 kWh (free) to smaller percentages on higher tiers. You must apply at any Meralco Business Center with proof of income/inclusion in 4Ps or barangay certification.

Are seniors entitled to a discount on their Meralco bill?

Yes. Under RA 9994 (Expanded Senior Citizens Act), seniors get a 5% discount on the first 100 kWh per month, provided the meter is registered under the senior’s name and the household monthly consumption is 100 kWh or less. Apply at any Meralco Business Center with your senior ID.

How is my kWh consumption measured?

Meralco reads your meter monthly (now mostly via smart meters automatically). Your bill shows: Previous Reading, Present Reading, and the difference is your kWh consumption. To verify: photograph your meter on the billing day each month and compare to your bill’s reading.

What’s the difference between kW and kWh?

kW (kilowatt) is power — how much energy an appliance USES at any moment. A 1,000W (1kW) aircon running for 1 hour uses 1 kWh of energy. kWh (kilowatt-hour) is energy consumed over time — this is what Meralco bills you for. Formula: kWh = kW × hours of use.

When is my Meralco bill due?

Bills are due 15 calendar days after the bill date (varies by area). Late payment triggers a 2% surcharge per month plus possible disconnection notice after 60 days. Pay online via Meralco’s web/app, GCash, Maya, Bayad Centers, banks, or auto-debit for convenience.

Can I pay my Meralco bill in installments if it’s too high?

Yes. Meralco offers staggered payment plans for bills above a certain threshold or for customers experiencing financial hardship. Visit any Meralco Business Center to request — typically split into 3-6 monthly installments with no additional interest if approved.

Are solar panels a good investment to lower my Meralco bill?

For households with monthly bills above ₱5,000 (heavy aircon users), solar typically pays back in 5-7 years and produces 25+ years of nearly-free electricity. The Net Metering Program (under RA 9513) lets you export excess solar back to the grid for credit. ROI is best for South-facing roofs in Metro Manila / Luzon.
