How Grab fare is calculated
Grab uses a dynamic pricing formula:
Fare = (Base + Per-km × km + Per-min × min) × Surge + Booking fee − Promo + Tip
Example: GrabCar, 8 km, 25 minutes, 1.0× surge:
- Base: ₱45
- Distance: 15 × 8 = ₱120
- Time: 2 × 25 = ₱50
- Subtotal: ₱215
- Surge 1.0×: ₱215
- Booking fee: ₱10
- Total: ₱225
Same trip at 1.8× surge (rush hour): ₱215 × 1.8 + ₱10 = ₱397. Surge nearly doubles rush hour fare.

When does surge kick in?
- Rush hour (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM weekdays): typically 1.3-1.8×
- Rain (light drizzle): 1.3-1.5×
- Heavy rain / typhoon: 2.0-3.0×
- Payday Friday (15th, 30th): 1.5-2.0× evenings
- Holiday eves (Dec 24, Dec 31): 2.5-3.0×
- Concerts / mall events: localized 1.5-2.5×
- Early morning airport (2-5 AM): 1.2-1.4×
Surge is dynamic based on real-time demand vs available drivers. Wait 5-10 min or walk a block over to lower surge zone.
Tips to save on Grab fare
- Book slightly outside the surge zone. Walk 100-200 m to a different corner to drop from 1.8× to 1.2×.
- Use GrabRewards points for ₱10-50 off. Earned by riding + linked GCash/credit card.
- Compare vs Angkas / MoveIt / JoyRide for motorbike trips. Often 20-30% cheaper.
- Set your destination first. Locked in fare = no surprise surge during trip.
- Pay with GCash / Maya for cashback promos (up to 20% back on qualifying rides).
- GrabSubscribe pass: monthly plan for regular commuters caps price.
- Traffic hack: booking at 4:30 PM (before 5 PM surge) can save 30% on the same route.
GrabTaxi vs GrabCar
GrabTaxi (yellow taxi on the app): standard metered taxi fare + ₱75 booking fee. Cheaper per km, but the ₱75 fee makes short trips expensive.
GrabCar: private sedan, upfront fixed price, subject to surge. More reliable, better cars, often faster booking.
Break-even is around 4 km. Below 4 km, GrabCar is cheaper. Above 4 km, GrabTaxi wins if no surge.
Alternative apps
- Angkas / Joyride / MoveIt: motorbike-only, usually 20-40% cheaper than GrabBike, no surge (regulated fixed rates).
- OWTO: local sedan competitor. Lower base fare, spotty coverage.
- InDrive: negotiate fare with driver, sometimes 30% cheaper for longer trips.
- Traditional taxi (street hail): metered, no booking fee. Cheaper but not always available.
