How EV charging cost works
Charging cost = kWh added to battery × electricity rate, adjusted for charging loss (energy lost as heat).
Formula: (Battery kWh × (Target% – Current%) / (1 – Loss%)) × Rate/kWh
Example: BYD Atto 3 (60.48 kWh), 20% to 80% at Meralco ₱11.50/kWh with 12% AC loss:
- Usable energy: 60.48 × 60% = 36.3 kWh
- Grid draw: 36.3 / 0.88 = 41.2 kWh
- Cost: 41.2 × 11.50 = ₱474
- Range added: 36.3 × 5.5 = 200 km
- Cost per km: ₱2.37/km

EV vs Gas: real cost savings
Typical PH driver, 1,500 km/month:

Battery temperature and state-of-charge affect real speed. DC fast charging slows down after 80%.
Battery care tips
- Charge to 80% daily. Only go 100% for long trips. Reduces battery degradation.
- Avoid draining below 20%. Deep discharge cycles reduce battery life.
- Prefer AC home charging. DC fast charging (used weekly+) accelerates degradation.
- Precondition battery before DC fast charging in hot Manila weather — use in-car battery preconditioning.
- Don’t leave at 100% for days. If parking long-term, leave at 50-60%.
Modern EV batteries last 8-15 years (up to 500,000 km) with proper care. Most PH warranties: 8 yrs / 160K km.
EV incentives in the Philippines
