PSE fee structure explained
Every PSE trade has 5 fees layered on top of your buy/sell price:
- Broker commission: 0.25% standard online (COL Financial, BPI Trade, First Metro Sec, Philstocks).
- Min commission: Usually ₱20 per side. Small trades get charged ₱20 anyway.
- VAT: 12% on the commission only (not on the gross trade value).
- PSE transaction fee: 0.005% on gross trade value.
- SCCP (Securities Clearing Corp) fee: 0.01% on gross trade value.
- Stock Transaction Tax (sell only): 0.6% on gross sell value. Final tax, no ITR needed.
Round-trip cost: ~1.2% of gross trade value. The stock needs to rise ~1.2% just to break even.
The break-even price — why it matters
The break-even price is the minimum sell price needed to recover ALL buying and selling costs — no profit, no loss.
Example: Bought 1,000 shares at ₱10 (gross ₱10,000). Total buy cost with fees = ₱10,041. To break even, you need to sell at ~₱10.10/share, NOT ₱10.
- Set stop-loss above break-even: A 1% drop is actually a ~2% loss after fees.
- Day-trading is expensive: Need 1.5%+ moves to be profitable.
- Long-term holding is fee-efficient: Fees amortized over years.
Stock Transaction Tax (STT) explained
Under NIRC Sec. 127, the 0.6% Stock Transaction Tax is a final tax on sales of shares listed on the PSE:
- 0.6% on gross sell value (not on the profit)
- Even if you sell at a LOSS, you still pay STT
- FINAL tax: you do NOT declare PSE-listed share gains in your annual ITR
- For UNLISTED shares: 15% Capital Gains Tax on net gain instead
Brokers automatically deduct STT and remit to BIR — no separate filing needed.
Tips for PH retail stock investors
- Avoid small trades: ₱5,000 buy at 0.25% = ₱12.50 (below ₱20 min). Build minimum trades to ₱10K+.
- Compare brokers: COL Financial, BPI Trade, First Metro Sec, Philstocks — all ~0.25%, pick by UX.
- FMETF for diversification: Tracks PSEi with 0.5% fund fee. Own all 30 PSEi components.
- Dividends: Cash dividends withheld at 10% (final tax) for residents.
- Keep records: Even though STT is final, keep buy/sell receipts.
